DIY Knee Pads for LIttle Ones

For my girls third birthday, I got them a 12" bicycle.  The bicycle is still a little too high for them, thus, balancing it is a bit tricky although the bicycle does come with extra two wheels at the rear.  Many has advised that I should get them a helmet and a pair of knee pads each.  I have since bought them each a Barbie helmet.  Thinking of DIY the knee pads instead of getting those commercial ones.

Below is a step by step guide in making the knee pads.

Materials (to make one knee pad)  :

A    14 x 15cm Printed cotton  (2 pieces)
B    14 x 15cm Flannel (2 pieces)
C      4 x 16cm Printed cotton (2 pieces)
D      1 x 14cm  Elastic band (2 pieces)
E    6.5 x 9.5cm Padding (I use old yoga mat)

Materials for the knee pad.  The padding is not in picture

Steps :

1) Fold C lengthwise with the right side of the fabric facing each other.  Sew along the edge lengthwise.  Turn it inside out so that the right side of the fabric is now facing out.  Repeat with the other piece of C.

Turning the sewn C piece inside out

2) Insert an elastic band into the sewn C.  Sew the end of the elastic band to the end of the C piece.  Repeat with the other side. The C piece will be slightly ruffled due to it being longer than the elastic band.

3) Place a piece of A with the right side facing up on a piece of B.  Arrange the two pieces of C from step 2 in horizontally so that each piece is about 1cm off the centre of A.  Place the second piece of A with the wrong side of the fabric facing up on the assembly. Then place the other piece of B onto it.  Pin everything in place.  The right side of the 2 pieces of A should be facing each other.

4) Sew along the 2 vertical sides of the assembly.  Remove all the pins (if used) and turn the assembly inside out.  The right side of the printed cotton should now be facing out.  Snip the corner of the assembly.  This is so that the corners will not bunched up when the knee pad is done.

5) Insert a piece of padding and place it in the middle of the assembly.  Top stich in place.

6) Fold the open end of the assembly in and sew in place.  Repeat with the other side.  The knee pad is now done.

The knee pads are supposed to prevent the knees of little ones from getting scratched in a fall.  It won't however, avoid the pain that comes with fall.  Pain is after all, part and parcel of growing up.
