Tutorial : Doodle Pouch
Here is the tutorial for the Doodle Pouch that I made for my girls earlier :
Materials :
1 card holder (20 x 25cm when opened)
2 pieces printed cotton (22 x 27cm ) - A
1 piece printed cotton (17 x 24cm) - B
1 piece printed cotton (18 x 13.5cm) - C
1 piece plain cotton (14 x 8cm) - D
Velcro 8cm
Velcro 3cm
* All seam allowances are 1cm unless otherwise stated.
** As mentioned in the earlier post How to Keep Kids Entertained, cardboard can be used in place of card holder. But the pouch cannot be washed if cardboard is used.
Steps :
1) Remove the content of the card holder from the cover.
2) Fold cotton B into half lengthwise with right side of the fabric facing each other.
3) Sew along the perimeter, leaving a gap of about 5cm. Snip off the corners.
4) Turn the piece inside out. The right side of the fabric should now be facing out.
5) Top stitch on the side where the gap was to close it. (There is no need to top stitch all four sides at this point).
6) Fold cotton C into half lengthwise with right side of the fabric facing each other.
7) Sew along the perimeter, leaving a gap of 5cm. Snip off the corners.
8) Turn the piece inside out. The right side of the fabric should now be facing out.
9) Top stitch on 3 sides of the piece, including where the gap was to close it.
10) Align the furry side of the velcro to the top of B. Pin in place. Then align the other side of the celcro to bottom of C, so that B and C will overlap at where the velcro are, forming a pocket.
11) Sew the velcro in place along the perimeter and an X box to secure it in place.
12) Place the 2 pieces of A with right side facing each other. Sew along the top.
13) Place the card holder between the 2 pieces with the right side of fabric facing out.
14) Arrange the pocket (Cotton B and C) to the right side of the card holder. Pin in place.
15) Remove the card holder. Spread out the 2 pieces of A. Sew the pocket with top stitch along the 3 lower perimeter of cotton B and along the top of cotton C.
16) Fold cotton D into half with right side of fabric facing each other. Sew along the perimeter, leaving a gap of 3cm. Snip off the corners.
17) Turn the piece inside out. Top stitch along the perimeter.
18) Top stitch the stiff side of the 3cm velcro to the end of cotton D.
19) Sew cotton D in place to the corresponding side of cotton A, where the pocket is. The velcro should be facing down.
20) Sew the furry side of the 3cm Velcro to the other side of the cotton A. The furry side should be facing up.
21) Fold the entire pieces of A so that the right side of the fabric is facing each other. Sew along one vertical side and the other horizontal side. Snip off the corners.
22) Turn the piece inside out. The right side of the fabric should now be facing out.
23) Insert the card holder into the 'sleeve'. Fold the extra fabric of the opening in. (Do not fold it too tight)
24) Top stitch along the perimeter.
25) Attach 2 clips on the left side of the pouch to hold the papers. (Such clips can be obtained from Daiso. Otherwise, a normal paper clip will do).
The pouch is now done.

9) Top stitch on 3 sides of the piece, including where the gap was to close it.
10) Align the furry side of the velcro to the top of B. Pin in place. Then align the other side of the celcro to bottom of C, so that B and C will overlap at where the velcro are, forming a pocket.
11) Sew the velcro in place along the perimeter and an X box to secure it in place.
12) Place the 2 pieces of A with right side facing each other. Sew along the top.
13) Place the card holder between the 2 pieces with the right side of fabric facing out.
14) Arrange the pocket (Cotton B and C) to the right side of the card holder. Pin in place.
15) Remove the card holder. Spread out the 2 pieces of A. Sew the pocket with top stitch along the 3 lower perimeter of cotton B and along the top of cotton C.

16) Fold cotton D into half with right side of fabric facing each other. Sew along the perimeter, leaving a gap of 3cm. Snip off the corners.
17) Turn the piece inside out. Top stitch along the perimeter.
18) Top stitch the stiff side of the 3cm velcro to the end of cotton D.
19) Sew cotton D in place to the corresponding side of cotton A, where the pocket is. The velcro should be facing down.
20) Sew the furry side of the 3cm Velcro to the other side of the cotton A. The furry side should be facing up.

Story Telling at Book Tree
Mothers are always the busiest in any household, especially mothers who ferry their children to attend classes, parties, etc. I had a taste of it last Saturday where we rushed from one class to another, all in a matter of few hours.
The girls attended their first Shichida class and first mandarin story telling session. The story telling was conducted by Book Tree, which is located in Section 19, PJ. Mr. Ng was the story teller of this particular session. It was my first time attending a story telling session too although I have heard many many stories in Sunday Schools when I was young. That was so long ago that I couldn't recall how it was done.
The story telling session started off with a few songs. Then Mr. Ng told a story based on a book. My! He was good! After the story telling, there was a craft session where a certain craft which was related to the story told earlier was made. This was then followed by another story and the session ended with songs again.

How to Keep Kids Entertained?
It really disturbed me to see young children nowadays are glued to handphones and tablets. Some even have to be spoon fed as they couldn't take their eyes and hands off the gadget, even for meals. One may wonder what are the parents of these kids thinking, letting them so hooked to these gadgets? The most common reason / excuse given : they just can't sit still.
Don't get me wrong. Technology and gadgets are good but they need to be used with care and under parental guidance. While using these gadgets for educational apps are ok, being hooked or addicted to the point children are oblivious to their surroundings and throwing tantrums when not given these gadgets are not. Surely there are many other ways to keep children entertained?
Hb and I did not let our girls use these gadgets at all until very recently where hb installed a few educational apps for them. Reason being that children still need to know about latest technologies, otherwise they will be very ignorant or what the malays called 'jakun'. Usage is limited to only one app per day and the daddy has to hold the gadget, instead of the girls. I, on the other hand, do not let the girls use my handphone or tablet at all.

So, in order to keep the girls entertained, we usually bring along books whenever we go out. I would like to bring along some writing utensils too. Just that they are too big, bulky and troublesome to carry along in my handbag. So, an idea hit me : make a mini pouch. One side of the pouch consists of papers while the other side is to hold some pens or pencils.
I set to work right away after getting the right materials : a card holder, fabrics, velcro and some paper clips. So here's the result :
The pouch is filled with a business card holder which provides it with a surface hard enough to write or doodle on. Cardboards will also do the trick. However, using plastic based materials will make it washable. Cardboards will be ruined once wet.
Filled the pocket with some colored pens. Color pencils or pencils would be good too. Just that they need regular sharpening and could cause a headache if there is no sharpener in hand when we are outside. There is ample room in the pocket for a small toy in which I put in a finger puppet from Ikea. It is not too bulky or heavy to carry in my handbag
.
The girls love it and can't do without it these days. Hb likes the idea of it too.

DIY Barbie Doll House
Every little girl yearns of Barbie. I myself am no exception. Unfortunately, I never have a Barbie when I was young. So when the daddy bought Barbie dolls for the girls, mummy is the one having fun with them.
Having a Barbie doll is without meaning without the change of clothes or a doll house. I attempted to sew the clothes for the dolls last week and I must say that it is enjoyable. Ventured into making a doll house next.
I love the idea of having an outdoor for the doll house. Thus, I made the house to have 3 storeys, with the top floor being smaller than the lower storeys and there is an outdoor area.
The frame of the doll house is made of cardboard boxes. While the furniture are made of either shoes boxes, containers or cardboards. This is sort of a recycled items project.
With the exception of the kitchen set, decorative food items, golf sets, teddy bear, floor mats and the large flower pot, all of the rest are handmade by myself.
The decorative food items and golf sets are actually erasers that I bought from Daiso, Tokyo a few years ago, meaning to give them to my nieces. However, they laid forgotten in the boxes till I came across them again when I spring cleaned earlier of the year.
I am very satisfied with the outcome and I hope the girls will like it too.
